Huge Second Period Leads Cornell Over No. 10 Princeton

Big Red score five goals late in second to top Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. (www.goprincetontigers.com)- Cornell scored five goals in the final 6:23 of the second period to overcome an early deficit and defeat the Princeton women's hockey team 7-4 on Friday night at Hobey baker Rink. Senior Sonja Novak scored twice for the Tigers in the loss.

Princeton scored the lone goal of the first period when she batted a pass from senior Brittany Salmon into the Cornell goal on the power play at 13:11 of the first period. Junior Christine Foster redirected a pass from freshman Caroline Park at 5:03 of the second to make the score 2-0 for Princeton, and freshman Jenna Hauca gave the Tigers a three-goal lead at the 7:51 mark of the second when she stuffed a rebound into the Cornell net.

Momentum shifted at that point, as Cornell scored the game's next six goals, five in a span of 6:12 late in the second period. Liz Zorn started the stretch at 13:37 and Amber Overguard made it a one-goal game 44 seconds later with a power-play goal from a shot on the point. Cornell tied the game on a tic-tac-toe passing play 42 seconds later that ended in a goal for Katie Bredice. Hayley Hughes made it 4-3 Cornell 1:03 later and Zorn capped the stretch with her second goal of the night with nine second left in the period.

Cornell extended the lead to 6-3 when Brianne Schmidt scored from in front at 6:55 of the third period. Princeton answered back 27 seconds later when Novak scored her second goal of the night. Novak and senior Marykate Oakley had a 2 on 1 and Novak's shot was saved but momentum carried the puck along with Cornell goaltender Kayla Strong over the goal line. Rebecca Johnston closed the scoring with a backhanded goal at 9:12 of the period.

Strong made 18 saves for the win while Princeton junior goaltender Kristen Young made 19 saves in the loss.

Princeton falls to 3-4-2 overall and 1-4-1 in ECAC Hockey. The Tigers host Colgate tomorrow at 4 p.m.
