MADISON, Wis. (www.uwbadgers.com)- The No. 1 Wisconsin Badgers broke the NCAA Division I women's hockey record for the longest unbeaten streak as they began WCHA play by defeating Ohio State 4-0 Saturday afternoon at the Kohl Center.
The win extended Wisconsin's unbeaten streak to 31 games, breaking the previous record of 30 held by New Hampshire during the 2005-06 season. The Badgers are 28-0-3 in that stretch.
Junior goaltender Jessie Vetter (Cottage Grove, Wis.) was solid in net as she turned away 12 Ohio State shots to earn her 18th career shutout and third of the season. Vetter's shutout ties her with former Badger Christine Dufour for first on the school's career shutout list.
Wisconsin (5-0-0, 1-0-0 WCHA) got on the board early in the first period as freshman Mallory Deluce (London, Ontario) scored on Wisconsin's first power play of the game, just 1:49 into the period. Alycia Mathews (Castlegar, British Columbia) passed the puck from the right point across to Windmeier (Champlin, Minn.) whose slapshot was tipped by Deluce past Ohio State (1-2-0, 0-1-0) goaltender Liana Bonanno.
The Badgers added one more goal before the end of the first when freshman Kelly Nash (Bonita, Calif.) scored halfway through the period at 9:21. Kyla Sanders skated behind the net before passing it in front to Tia Hanson (Medicine Hat, Alberta) and Hanson's rebound was put back by Nash for Wisconsin's second goal. Wisconsin out-shot the Buckeyes 15-1 in the first frame.
It was more of the same in the second and third periods as Wisconsin padded its lead with two more goals. The Badgers' third goal came late in the second period on a great individual effort by sophomore Jasmine Giles. The Ottawa, Ontario native's first goal of the season came 16:41 into the second when she intercepted an errant Ohio State pass at center ice. Giles fired a wrist shot that was saved by Bonanno, but she was able to swat the rebound out of midair and into the back of the net giving Wisconsin a 3-0 lead heading into the final period.
Kayla Hagen (Crosslake, Minn.) notched her first goal of the season when she scored at 5:23 in the third period. Freshman Olivia Jakiel (Santa Clara, Calif.), who got her second career assist, was able to steal the puck away from the Buckeyes on the left boards before feeding it across to Hagen who followed her own rebound and scored Wisconsin's fourth and final goal.
Wisconsin finished the game 1-for-6 on the power play while Ohio State was 0-for-2.
The Badgers will look to extend their unbeaten streak to 32 games as they wrap up their series with the Buckeyes tomorrow afternoon at the Kohl Center. The puck is set to drop at 1:07 p.m.
