Women's Ice Hockey Announces Class of 2011

Big Red adds nine to its roster for the 2007-08 season

ITHACA, N.Y.--The Cornell women's ice hockey team will add nine freshmen to its lineup for the 2007-08 season it was announced today by head coach Doug Derraugh '91. The diverse group includes two goaltenders and seven skaters that will come to East Hill from five different states and provinces. 

 

"We are very excited about our incoming class," Derraugh said. "We have strengthened our team at every position. They will have an immediate impact on our program. Assistant coaches Danielle Bilodeau and Kim Insalaco have done an outstanding job recruiting this class, and should be commended for their work."

 

Katie Bredice (Edina, Minn.) will join her former Minnesota Thoroughbreds' teammate Kelly McGinty at Cornell. The five-time letter winner for Hopkins Senior High School was named all-conference three times. Bredice was named academic all-state because of her hard work in the classroom and on the ice. While serving as her team captain, she was a two-time team MVP and was a five-time Community Olympic Development Program participant.


 

 

 

Forward Hayley Hughes (Stouffville, Ont.) finished second in scoring for the Toronto Aeros last season and finished in the top 20 of her league. Hughes was named a Metro Toronto first-team all-star in 2007. Her brother, Bobby, was a 2006 Carolina Hurricanes draft pick and will play for their American Hockey League affiliate in Albany for the 2007-08 season.

 

Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, Ont.) will join her sister, Sarah, on the Big Red's roster. Their brother, Jacob, will be a freshman on the men's team in fall. Johnston is a two-time member of the under 22 Canadian national team. After tallying eight goals and five assists in five games for the gold medal winning Ontario team at the Canada Games, Johnston was added as an alternate forward to Canada's national women's team. She is also a nationally-ranked junior sprinter after winning the bronze medal at the Canadian junior track and field championships last year.

 

Amber Moore (Sunnyvale, Calif.) served as captain for the San Jose Jr. Sharks under-19 team in 2006. She was selected for the Pacific District honor team and was the assistant captain of the Pacific Steelers Black Team. Moore helped lead her team to third place at the Propects Tournament in Toronto, Canada and was the runner-up at the 2006 Pacific District championship. She was also a member of track and field at Fremont HS competing in the shot put and also played roller hockey.

 

Karlee Overguard (Sundre, Alta.) was an assistant captain for Team Alberta at the Canada Winter Games. She was a member of the provincial championship team in 2005 and was a silver medalist at the Westerns in 2005. Overguard was also a two-time assistant captain for the Red Deer Chiefs. The forward also ran cross country and track and was a member of the badminton, baseball and volleyball teams at Warner HS. 

 

Amber Overguard (Sundre, Alta.) will join her twin sister, Karlee, as part of the class of 2011. She was a member of Team Alberta and played at the Canada Winter Games. Overguard was an alternate captain for the Warner Warriors in 2006. At Warner HS, she also played badminton, baseball, volleyball and ran track.

 

Kayla Strong (Calgary, Alta.) will join the Big Red as a goaltender for the 2007-08 season. Strong was the MVP for the Calgary Flyers in 2007. As a member of Team Alberta, she participated in the 2007 Canada Winter games. Strong also played basketball and field hockey at Central Memorial HS in the National Sport Academy.

 

Defenseman Sam Wauer (Oakbank, Man.) was a silver medalist at the Canada Winter Games as a member of Team Manitoba in 2007. Wauer served as the assistant captain for the Balmoral Hall Blazers. A five-sport athlete, she was a member of the Notre Dame soccer and rugby teams that won the provincial championship in 2006. Wauer also ran track and was a middle blocker on her volleyball team.

 

Katie Wilson (Uxbridge, Ont.) was the starting goaltender for Uxbridge Secondary School for four seasons compiling a 54-10-3 overall record. She helped lead her team to a CAN-AM Cup championship in 2005 and was a bronze medalist in 2003. As a member of the Markham-Stouffville Jr. Stars, Wilson posted 18 shutouts in 24 games in 2003.
