Austin, TX (U-WIRE) -- The No. 25 Texas women's golf team finished a disappointing 16th place at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina. With a weekend team score of 74-over-par 938, the Longhorns limped to the finish as four of five players shot their worst scores on Sunday.
Texas was led by freshman Caney Hines, who entered the last day at 5-over par. She doubled her score on Sunday and finished at 10-over-par 226, which was good enough for 25th place.
Junior Julia Best finished the first round at 1-under par and was in third place after the first day. But like her teammates, Best could not find her game the rest of the weekend, shooting back-to-back 9-over pars, scoring a 17-over-par 233 and placing 59th.
No. 2 Duke finished the tournament in first, firing an impressive 3-under-par 861. Duke dominated the field, with the closest team being Auburn, 21 strokes behind. Vanderbilt closed out the weekend in third, shooting a 29-over-par 893.
Ashley Knoll of Texas A&M gave College Station something to cheer about, winning the tournament with an outstanding 10-under-par 206.
Texas freshman Kristin Walla came into to the tournament playing in the No. 1 spot for the Longhorns but struggled to find her game. She finished the tournament with a final-day 81 and at 23-over par in 74th.
Sophomore Kelly Louth's struggles continue, finishing in 85th place with a 27-over-par 243. Seeing her first action this season was Brittany Gilvilancz, who scored a 30-over-par 246 and ended up in 91st. Her score was not recorded in the team competition, because only the top four scores are counted.
The Longhorns will tee off again on Oct. 29, when they host the Weis Cup-Alumni Matches.
