Japan - The Tulsa women's golf team leads after the opening round of the Topy Cup U.S.-Japan Intercollegiate Golf Championship on Tuesday. The Hurricane carded a round of 290 and leads second-ranked UCLA by three strokes.
Tulsa's trio of freshmen Marita Engzelius, Shu Yin Liu and Kamryn Ruffin paced the Tulsa attack. Engzelius shot a two-under par 70 to take the individual lead after the first 18 holes. She leads UCLA's Glory Yang by one stroke. Engzelius had four birdies on the day, coming on the par-4 second hole, par-5 ninth, the par-5 11th and the par-5 14th hole.
Liu is in a tie for third-place with a score of 72, while Ruffin and senior Woori Shin are tied for sixth place with scores of two-over par 74. Shin had birdie putts on holes four and six. Hurricane sophomore Kelly Fuchik carded a round of 79 for 21st place, while sinking an eagle on the par-5 11th hole for her only under-par hole of the day.
Competition in the 54-hole tournament continues today in Japan.
