Former Women's Golfer Ashley Hovda, WCU Women's Student-Athletes Recognized by the Southern Conference

The Southern Conference has celebrated its 25th anniversary of women's athletics all year long

Spartanburg, S.C. - The 2007-08 academic year marks the 25th anniversary of women's championships in the Southern Conference, and to celebrate the occasion, the league is spotlighting individuals who have been named to the league's 25th Anniversary teams.

Ashley Hovda (2001-2005) of Western Carolina won many awards as a student-athlete competing with the Western Carolina women's golf team. Hovda was a three-time SoCon women's golfer of the month, two-time All-SoCon and earned National Golf Coaches Association All-American scholar twice.

Hovda finished her career with 14 top 10 finishes which included three individual medalist honors.

As a senior, she set the single season scoring record at Western Carolina averaging 74.86 over 26 rounds. Hodva continues to rank fifth on Western Carolina's all-time career scoring chart with a four-year average of 77.38.

The following Western Carolina student-athletes join Hovda on the Southern Conference's 25th Anniversary Teams:

Jennifer Gardner (2001-05), Basketball - Two-Time All-SoCon; School record for free throws with 444 made in her career; 2005 SoCon Tournament MVP

Regina Brown (1987-90), Volleyball - Western Carolina's only SoCon Player of the Year; Inducted into the Western Carolina hall of Fame in 1998.

Nardia Moore (1999-02), Soccer - Three-time All-SoCon selection; ranks first in single-season statistics with 15 goals on 38 shots; ranks first in career goals with 38 and total points with 96.

Devondia Ross (1991-94), Outdoor Track & Field - Inducted into the Western Carolina Hall of Fame in 2005; invited to the Olympic Trials in 1992; 1991 SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Most Outstanding Performer; the first Catamount female to be named a Division I All-American.

Ashley Adams (2005-06), Softball - Named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I Southeastern All-Region Team; She led the conference with 61 RBI in '05, second most in conference history.

 

 

Susie Gardner-Mayhorn (1989-93), Cross Country - Won the Dorothy Hix post graduate scholarship in 1993; Western Carolina's Female Scholar Athlete of the Year Award winner.

Kristin Cotton (2002-05), Tennis - Finished with 32 singles wins and 30 doubles wins to lead all Western Carolina women's tennis players.
