Below is a summary of Wednesday's first round action in the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament.
TCNJ 5, Keene State 1
Junior defender Meg Hess (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) scored the go-ahead goal and added two assists to lead The College of New Jersey's field hockey past Keene State College (NH) on Wednesday afternoon in Lions' Stadium. TCNJ has advanced to the NCAA Division III second round, which will be hosted by Bowdoin College (Brunswick, ME) on Saturday, November 12. TCNJ faces the Bowdoin Polar Bears at 11:00 a.m. TCNJ improves to 15-4 on the year, while Keene State's season finishes with the Owls standing at 14-9. (Full Story at tcnjathletics.com)
MIDDLEBURY 5, MANHATTANVILLE 1
Middlebury cruised to a 5-1 win over Manhattanville in the first round of the NCAA Division III field hockey tournament on a cold and rainy afternoon on Kohn Field. The Panthers advance to Bowdoin to take on Springfield Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The regional final is slated for Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Manhattanville, who was making its first NCAA Tournament appearance, ends its season at 13-10. MONTCLAIR STATE 2, WASHINGTON & LEE 0
Sophomore Jennifer Tanis and senior Alexandria Kelly each scored a goal as Montclair State knocked off Washington & Lee University, 2-0, in the opening round of the 2005 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship at Sprague Field on Wednesday afternoon. (Full Story at montclair.edu)
ALVERNIA 2, LYNCHBURG 1
Junior forward Megan Novogratz (Allentown, PA/Central Catholic) scored the latter of two second-half goals to give Alvernia College a 2-1 win over Lynchburg College in the first round of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship Wednesday afternoon at Lynchburg. OBERLIN 1, LEBANON VALLEY 0
A penalty corner goal from senior Christine Castilla gave the Oberlin College field hockey team all that it would need to advance to the next round of the NCAA tournament. Senior Emily Clark scored four goals and added two assists to lead the Skidmore College field hockey team to a 6-0 win over New England College in the first round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III tournament, Wednesday afternoon at Skidmore Stadium. BABSON 5, UTICA 2
Senior tri-captain Elise Conley recorded her fourth hat trick of the season to lead the Babson field hockey team to a 5-2 victory over visiting Utica College in the Beavers' first-ever NCAA Tournament game on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, Babson advances to the second round at Ursinus College (Pa.), where the Beavers, ranked 15th in the nation with a record of 19-5, will face Cortland State on Saturday at 2 p.m. For Conley, the goals were her 31st, 32nd, and 33rd of the season, breaking her own school record of 30 set last fall. WILLIAMS 6, WESTERN NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE 0
Williams College (14-4) got goals from six different players as the Ephs downed Western New England College (WNEC) 6-0 in a first round NCAA Tournament game played on a wind and rain swept Renzie Lamb Field. With the loss WNEC finishes the season at 19-5. (Full Story at williams.edu)
