Sept. 18, 2007
GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina senior Jesse Gey has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week following a pair of wins last weekend by the top-ranked Tar Heels. Gey opened the scoring in both outings, in each case putting the Tar Heels up 1-0 with what would prove to be the gamewinner.
In a 3-0 win over No. 13 Old Dominion on Friday, Gey scored 1:42 into the second half to break a scoreless tie and put Carolina ahead for good. In Sunday's 6-0 win over No. 7 Penn State, Gey scored 3:10 into the match and UNC never looked back. She assisted on three second-half goals to finish with five points against the Nittany Lions and also made key defensive plays as the Tar Heels held Penn State without a shot.
On the season, Gey leads UNC and ranks second in the ACC in scoring with 21 points on six goals and nine assists. All six of her goals this season have been gamewinners and she leads the league in that category.
The Tar Heels (8-0) are back in action on Thursday, hosting Appalachian State at 7 p.m. They open the conference slate Saturday with a matchup against No. 13 Duke.
UNC remains the No. 1 team in the nation and is now drawing 41 of 49 first-place votes in the coaches' poll. Maryland, also undefeated, is No. 2 with the remaining eight first-place votes.
