Duke Field Hockey Team Falls To Top-Ranked Wake Forest 3-1

The Duke University field hockey team jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Saturday before top-ranked Wake Forest collected three unanswered goals to hand the Blue Devils their first loss of the year. Duke drops to 4-1 overall and 0-1 in the ACC, while the Demon Deacons improved to 4-0 and 1-0 on the year.

Junior Chrissie Murphy got the Blue Devils off on the right foot with her fifth goal of the season with 14:25 gone by in the opening half. Sophomore Katie Grant slipped a pass between a Wake defender and goalie Katie Ridd for her fifth assist.

Wake Forest came back with a Lucy Shaw goal at the 19 minute mark to knot the score at 1-1. The score remained tied going into halftime as the two teams combined for just two shots on goal.

The Demon Deacons came out in the second half and controlled play. Kelly Dostal gave the visitors a 2-1 lead just over three minutes into the second half with Kelly Doton assisting on the play. Doton again assisted on a Wake Forest goal at the 53:32 mark this time with Katie Ackerman collecting the goal.

Duke goalie Christy Morgan collected two saves in the game. The Blue Devils return to action on Sunday, September 21 when they host Old Dominion at 1:00 p.m.
