Billikens Take on Michigan and Ball State

Begin five-game road swing


The Billikens begin a five-game road swing this week

THIS WEEK: The Saint Louis field hockey team embarks on a five-game road swing with two games in Muncie, Ind., this weekend. The Billikens face No. 9 Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 13, in a noon contest. The next day, SLU plays host team Ball State in a noon match.

RECAPPING LAST WEEK: The Billikens dropped two home games at the Anheuser-Busch Center. Stephanie Ertzberger tallied two goals but Missouri State slipped past SLU 3-2 on Friday. Indiana scored the only goal it would need midway through the first half and kept the Billikens off the scoreboard in a 4-0 decision on Sunday.

ABOUT MICHIGAN: The Wolverines are 1-3 on the season but have played one of the most difficult schedules in the country. Michigan has dropped games to the top three teams in the country - No. 1 North Carolina, No. 2 Maryland and No. 3 Wake Forest. Meredith Way leads UM with four goals, while Sarah Wilhite has five assists on the season. Paige Pickett has started all four of Michigan's games in goal and has a 4.33 GAA. Head coach Nancy Cox is 55-36 in her fifth season.

ABOUT BALL STATE: The Cardinals stand at 1-3 on the season, including an 8-3 loss at the hands of Atlantic 10 representative Richmond. St. Louis native Brittany Hammer is BSU's leading scorer with three goals, while Jodi Mann and Caitlin Maguire both have scored twice. Tiffany Shifflett has been in the cage for every minute this season and totes a 6.11 GAA. Head coach Annette Payne is in her sixth season at BSU and has a 30-68 record.

COACHING STAFF: Head coach Marcie Boyer is in her third season at SLU with a 12-27 career mark. An assistant coach at SLU in 2004, Boyer spent the 2005 season as an assistant at A-10 rival West Chester before returning to the Billikens as the head coach in 2006. She is a 2003 graduate of New Hampshire. Boyer is assisted by fellow UNH grad Lauren Bruce.

 

 

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE: The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) named 14 members of the 2007 Saint Louis field hockey team to the Division I National Academic Squad. As a team, the Billikens joined five other Atlantic 10 teams in earning the NFHCA's Division I National Academic Team Award with a team GPA of at least 3.0. Only six schools had more than the Billikens' 14 selections.

THREE IN A ROW: Sophomore Stephanie Ertzberger, who did not register a point as a freshman, scored in SLU's first three games of the season. Her scoring streak finally came to an end when the Billikens were blanked by Indiana.

BOYNE IDENTITY: Junior forward Molly Boyne (Escondido, Calif. / San Pasqual) had one shot against Indiana.

CB RADIO: Senior back Cathi Brownell (Oconomowoc, Wis. / University Lake) earned starts in the back for both games last weekend and had a shot against Missouri State.

THE DEEM TEAM: Sophomore keeper Katherine Deem (Fairview Park, Ohio / Magnificat) played just under 15 minutes in the Indiana game and had three saves ... played the entire second half against Missouri State and finished with four saves.

BURGER KING: Sophomore midfielder Stephanie Ertzberger (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) scored two second-half goals against Missouri State.

FRAMPED-UP: Senior back Christine Frampus (Chevy Chase, Md. / Bethesda Chevy Chase) started both games last weekend.

DON'T MEZ WITH TEXAS: Sophomore midfielder Natalie Gamez (Fort Worth, Texas / Trinity Valley) was in the starting lineup for both games last week.

SAAB POWERED: Senior midfielder Emily Kassab (Mount Joy, Pa. / Donegal) earned two starts last week.

NICK OF TIME: Freshman forward Nicole Kent (Pewaukee, Wis. / Arrowhead) appeared in the Indiana and Missouri State games.

BARGING AHEAD: Freshman keeper Alex LaBarge (St. Louis, Mo. / Villa Duchesne) started the Indiana contest and recorded 12 saves ... was in the starting 11 versus Missouri State and finished with six saves.

HI AND LO: Junior midfielder Sarah Lohmann (Houston, Texas / Duchesne) put two shots on goal against Indiana ... started and had one shot versus Missouri State.

GOOD LUCK CHARM: Junior back Eva Luck (St. Louis, Mo. / Cor Jesu) registered a defensive save against Indiana.

GRAN SLAM: Senior midfielder Jacklyn McGranahan (Bay Village, Ohio / Magnificat) had two shots on goal against Indiana ... picked up an assist on Stephanie Ertzberger's first goal versus Missouri State.

NO WAY: Freshman midfielder Lauren Noe (Prospect, Ky. / Assumption) came off the bench in the Indiana game ... started and took one shot versus Missouri State.

KELSEY'S KORNER: Sophomore forward Kelsey Shultz (St. Louis, Mo. / Villa Duchesne) picked up an assist on Stephanie Ertzberger's second goal versus Missouri State ... is keeping a blog this season titled "Kelsey's Korner," available exclusively on www.slubillikens.com.

FAST MOVING TRAYN: Sophomore back Kelsey Traynor (Denver, Colo. / St. Mary's) appeared in both games last week.

SPIDER WEB: Sophomore midfielder Alex Weber (Prospect, Ky. / Country Day) started both contests last week.
