Amherst, Mass. - UMass field hockey players Katie Kelly and Alesha Widdall have been named Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively. Kelly has also been named UMass/Dinn Bros. Co-Athlete of the Week with football quarterback Liam Coen. Announced on Monday, these honors come after the Minutewomen finished the weekend 2-0 to improve their record to 3-1, winning the last three games after losing to Boston College in the season opener.

UMass forward Katie Kelly (Dedham, Mass.) scored the game winning goal against Northeastern, netting a total of three goals on five shots. Kelly scored her first goal of the season at Dartmouth on Friday to give the Minutewomen a 1-0 lead going into the half. UMass would go on to win 2-0 against the Big Green. Kelly saved her best for Sunday, where she scored both UMass goals to turn a 1-0 deficit at Northeastern into a 2-1 victory for the Minutewomen. Kelly is now tied with Jill Powers for the team lead in goals (3) and points (7).

Alesha Widdall (Whitney Point, N.Y.), the Minutewomen's freshman goalkeeper, was named Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week for her exceptional play in the two road games against Dartmouth and Northeastern. Widdall recorded her second-straight shutout against Dartmouth to earn the first-ever Minutewomen victory at Chase Field. On Sunday, Widdall stopped seven penalty corner opportunities and one penalty stroke. She maintained a .50 goals against average and a .889 save percentage in 140 minutes of play. With the two victories, Widdall moves to 3-1 in her career.

With the help of these outstanding athletes, the Minutewomen were able to snap a three-game losing streak against Dartmouth and a seven-game slide against the Huskies. UMass returns to action Friday, taking on the No. 4 ranked Huskies of UConn at Garber Field. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
