CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina women's basketball program signed two players to national letters of intent on Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period. Jessica Breland from Kelford, N.C., and Trinity Bursey from Sanford, N.C., will be freshmen on the 2006-07 squad.
"We're the University of North Carolina and it's nice to have what I consider the two best players in the state becoming Tar Heels," UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell said. "And they're not just the two best players in the state, but two of the best in the country. They fit our style of play and they fit in well with our team. They're great kids and they're going to be outstanding additions to our program."
Breland, who attends Bertie High School in Windsor, N.C., is a 6-3 forward. She has been named team MVP in each of the last three years and was the conference player of the year last season as a junior. An AAU All-America and third-team Street & Smith's All-America pick, she has consistently been ranked among the top players in her class. Breland is a Full Court Press/Scout.com Preseason All-American and is ranked No. 6 in the Class of 2006 . She also competes in volleyball and track and field.
"Jessica can play any position - she can dunk, she can shoot outside, she can play point guard if we need her to," Hatchell said. "She's athletic and so versatile. She's got all the tools to become one of the best players ever to be a part of our program."
Bursey is a 5-10 forward who attends Western Harnett High School in Lillington, N.C. She was the conference and team MVP in 2005, her first season at Western Harnett. Prior to that, her family lived in England, where she was the team MVP and Female Athlete of the Year at Lakenheath High School. She led her team to the European Championship in 2004 and earned All-Europe honors in both basketball and track and field, in which she competed in the high jump and the long jump.
"Trinity is a forward who can play inside or outside," Hatchell said. "She's very effective in the high post area and has a tremendous work ethic. She's only going to get better and better."
The 2005-06 Tar Heel roster includes three seniors - La'Tangela Atkinson, Jennifer Nelms and Jessica Sell. UNC, the defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion, opens the season on Nov. 18 with a home game against Davidson.
