Oct. 2, 2007
WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's basketball team is nationally ranked in five preseason publications, including Top 15 rankings from SLAM Magazine, Lindy's Sports Annuals and The Sporting News College Basketball Yearbook.
The Colonials received a No. 10 ranking from SLAM Magazine and are ranked No. 13 in Lindy's Sports Annuals. The Sporting News College Basketball Yearbook, which combined with Street & Smith's this year and hits newsstands Oct. 9, positioned GW at No. 11 and chose senior point guard Kimberly Beck as a Third Team Preseason All-American. Beck was an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America selection and Nancy Lieberman Award finalist last season after averaging 11.3 points and Atlantic 10 Conference leading 5.3 assists.
Head coach Joe McKeown's team also earned a No. 24 ranking from Athlon Sports and No. 25 billing from Women's Basketball Magazine. Preseason Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Polls will be released in early November.
GW reached the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 for the third time in program history last season, matched the school record with 28 victories and was ranked No. 11 in the final ESPN/USA Today Coaches Top 25 Poll. McKeown, who enters his 19th season at GW 18 victories shy of 500 for his career, returns four starters and 11 letterwinners from last season's roster, led by Beck, fellow seniors Sarah-Jo Lawrence and Whitney Allen and junior Jessica Adair.
The Colonials host DT-3 All Stars in an exhibition game at Smith Center, Friday, Nov. 2, before tipping-off the 2007-08 season at Maryland-Baltimore County, Friday, Nov. 9. This year's schedule features 13 teams that qualified for postseason play last season, highlighted by 2007 national runner-up and unanimous preseason Top 5 pick Rutgers at Smith Center, Sunday, Nov. 18.
