Sept. 21, 2007

PITTSBURGH - The Pitt women's basketball team continues to break new ground as it has received numerous preseason rankings, including a No. 18 ranking from Lindy's Sports Annuals and a No. 21 ranking from both Athlon Sports Annuals and WomensBasketballMagazine.com.

The Panthers, who return all five starters from their record-breaking 24-9 season in 2006-07, also return All-Big East performer Mallorie Winn (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's/Georgia Tech), who sat out last season with a knee injury. Included in those five starters is Kodak/WBCA District I All-American Marcedes Walker (Philadelphia, Pa./University City) and the Big East's Most Improved Player in 2007, Shavonte Zellous (Orlando, Fla./Jones).

In addition to individual accolades, Pitt attended its first-ever NCAA Tournament in 2006-07, defeating James Madison, 71-61, in the first round at the Petersen Events Center. The team was also ranked for the first time in school history in the coaches poll and the first time since 1979 in the AP poll.

Last season, Pitt earned its first-ever preseason ranking at No. 24 by Street & Smith's. The publication is expected to release its preseason rankings for 2007-08 on Oct. 9. Preseason Associated Press and USA Today/WBCA Coaches Polls will not be released until closer to the season.

Pitt opens the season Thursday, Nov. 1 with an exhibition game against Premier Players at the Petersen Events Center. Practices are set to begin Friday, Oct. 12 and Pitt's Basketball Fan Fest will be held Sunday, Oct. 21.
