Baylor women's basketball's 2008-09 schedule features a foreign tour, a program first, and 15 teams that competed in postseason tournaments last year, including nine that earned NCAA Tournament bids (California, Iowa State, Kansas State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Stanford, Texas, Texas A&M) and six who were selected to the Postseason WNIT (Colorado, St. John's, Texas State, Texas Tech, Villanova, Wisconsin).
In addition, six of the teams featured on the upcoming schedule ranked among the nation's top 25 teams at season's end (No. 4 Stanford, No. 8 Texas A&M, No. 10 California, No. 13 Oklahoma State, No. 14 Oklahoma, No. 16 Kansas State). The Lady Bears will play eight non-conference games in the Ferrell Center and six on the road, three of which are in the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands.
"I believe that we have assembled another non-conference schedule that will prepare our team for the highly competitive Big 12 Conference, one of the nation's toughest women's basketball leagues," said head coach Kim Mulkey. "We are at a point with our program where we have a national reputation now, and we want to play opponents that will help us maintain what we have built."
The Lady Bears will get a jump start on the 2008-09 season when they take their first-ever foreign tour. Baylor will travel to Vancouver, British Columbia, where it will take on Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia in exhibition contests on Aug. 30 & 31, respectively.
After two more exhibition games in early November, Baylor will begin non-conference action by hosting Florida Atlantic (Nov. 14), Stanford, which finished last season ranked No. 4, on Nov. 16 and Stephen F. Austin (Nov. 21).
Baylor plays its first road game of the regular season on Nov. 23 against former Southwest Conference foe Rice. Then it's off to the Virgin Islands for Thanksgiving where the Lady Bears will tangle with Central Florida, Villanova and Wisconsin on Nov. 27, 28, 29, respectively. The Lady Bears then return to the friendly confines of the Ferrell Center for four straight games hosting St. John's (Dec. 6), Lamar (Dec. 8), Samford (Dec. 13) and UT-Pan American (Dec. 16). The month of December ends with a West Coast road trip for rematches at Pac-10 foes Oregon (Dec. 20) and California (Dec. 22).
After returning from Christmas break, Baylor will welcome the new year with a home contest against Texas State (Jan. 3) before its Jan. 10 Big 12 opener at Colorado.
The Lady Bears continue league play with five more January games, three at home and two on the road, four of those games are against 2008 NCAA Tournament teams. In fact, all of seven Baylor's January games are against 2008 postseason entrants. After returning from Colorado, Baylor hosts Iowa State (Jan. 14) and Oklahoma State (Jan. 17) before back-to-back road trips to Texas A&M (Jan. 21) and Texas Tech (Jan. 24). The Lady Bears close out January with a home game against Oklahoma on the 28th.
The beginning of February sees Baylor hosting Texas (Feb. 1), at Nebraska (Feb. 4), returning home for a Ferrell Center game against Kansas State (Feb. 7) and at Oklahoma State (Feb. 11). Next up is a Valentine's Day matchup at home against Missouri followed by a Feb. 21 contest at Oklahoma. The Lady Bears close out February with a home game against Texas Tech on the 25th and at Texas on Feb. 28. The conference portion of Baylor's schedule will be completed in March as the Lady Bears play at Kansas (March 4) and host Texas A&M on March 7.
The 2009 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship will return for the second time to the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Okla., March 12-15. This year's tournament features a new format as first round action will take place on Thursday with quarterfinals on Friday, semifinals on Saturday and the final on Sunday.
