July 24, 2007

ITHACA, N.Y. - Dayna Smith, the Rebecca Quinn Morgan '60 Head Coach of Women's Basketball, has announced that Susie Doyle and Emma Shalaway will join the Cornell University women's basketball team in the fall of 2007. "We are extremely excited to have these two young ladies join our program," Smith said. "They both have excellent playing experience and bring very different styles to the court."

A native of Dublin, Ireland, Doyle has been a member of the U16, U17 and U18 Irish National Teams. Her 6-0 frame provides her the ability to play both the guard and forward positions. Doyle was named the team MVP as both a junior and a senior at The Donnybrook School of Dublin and led her squad to the All-Ireland title during her senior season. She led her U16 and U18 Irish National Teams to the European Championships and was named captain of the U16 squad in 2004 and the U18 team in 2006.

"We're really excited about what Susie has to offer our program," Smith said. "She is a very versatile player with the size and the skill to play inside and out. After competing in the European Championships again this summer, Susie is sure to bring a great deal of playing experience, along with her rebounding and scoring abilities, to the team."

A four-time varsity letter winner at Mount de Chantal Academy, Shalaway was a prolific scoring guard and finished her high school basketball career with 1,174 points. She started all four years, leading her team to an overall record of 71-24, and was named co-captain during her senior season. Shalaway averaged 12.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in high school. She broke the single season record for 3-pointers made at both Mount de Chantal and Cameron High Schools, connecting on 50 as a junior at Mount and hitting 57 during her sophomore season at Cameron. A first-team All-Ohio Valley selection and member of the Ohio Valley All-Star Team, Shalaway was also a three-time All-Ohio Valley Academic Team selection.

"Emma is going to add great depth to our guard position, thanks to her outstanding ability to score from 3-point range," Smith said. "We are really excited to have someone with her shooting ability and work ethic in our program and she should definitely make our guard core even stronger."

The Big Red open the 2007-08 season at Long Island University on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 2 p.m.
