DURHAM, N.C. - Duke University junior Jessica Foley has been selected by Basketball Australia to represent the `Price Attack' Opals squad for 2005, which will play from July 8-18 in an International Tournament in China as well as Aug. 29 - Sept. 4 at the FIBA Oceania Women's Championship in New Zealand.
Foley, a 2004-05 third team All-ACC selection, was one of 30 players selected to play for the Opals, including triple Olympian Trisha Fallon, 2003 WNBA Player of the Year Lauren Jackson, WNBA standout Penny Taylor and WNBL Rookie of the Year Renae Camino. The team will be working towards the 2006 Commonwealth Games, which will be played in Melbourne, Australia.
A native of Wodonga, Victoria, Australia, Foley has come into her own this season with the fifth-ranked Duke women's basketball team. The 6-0 guard has hit a school-record 66 three-pointers this season, while averaging 11.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.9 steals. After playing her first two years at Duke behind Alana Beard and adjusting to the U.S. game, Foley is registering double her career average in minutes, points, rebounds, assists and steals this year.
In the ACC stats, Foley ranks 24th in scoring (11.2), third in three-point field goal made (2.06), eighth in three-point field goal percentage (35.9), 15th in steals (1.94) and third in assist/turnover ratio (1.71). In ACC games only, she ranked 14th in scoring (13.6), third in three-point field goal percentage (41.6) and second in three-point field goals made (2.64).
Foley has represented Australia on the 2003 FIBA Women's Championship, Australia Institute of Sport teams, 2001 Australian Under-20 World Championship squad and was a member of the 2000 and 2001 Australian Under-20 International Tour.
The Opal's full roster includes Deanne Butler, Jessica Bibby, Kristi Harrower, Renae Camino, Jae Kingi, Kathleen Macleod, Erin Phillips, Michelle Musselwhite, Alicia Poto, Jenni Screen, Samantha Richards, Jessica Foley, Belinda Snell, Kristen Veal, Allison Tranquilli, Carly Wilson, Carla Boyd, Suzy Batkovic, Trisha Fallon, Hollie Grima, Shelly Hammonds, Jacinta Hamilton, Katrina Hibbert, Lauren Jackson, Emily McInery, Natalie Porter, Laura Summerton, Gabrielle Richards, Penny Taylor and Jenny Whittle.
The first training camp is scheduled for June.
Duke enters the NCAA Tournament with a 28-4 record and is waiting for the tournament selection show on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. to see where the Blue Devils will be seeded and playing.
