The second-ranked Iowa State wrestling team continues its season by heading into Nebraska for the Husker duals against No. 3 NAIA opponent Dana College and Chadron State. The Cyclones, 7-0, are coming off its first win in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, as it defeated in-state rival Iowa for the second year in a row, 19-16. Dana, who defeated No. 1 Missouri Valley, 22-13, is 4-2 on the season. Chadron State is 0-1 on the year after a season-opening loss to the Colorado Mines, 38-6.
"The guys have done a great job of preparing for the meet," Iowa State head coach Bobby Douglas said. "It will help us prepare for the Midlands tournament later in the month."
ISU will start Ben Hanisch at 125 pounds and weigh in Jason Knipp, David Bertolino and Woodley Milord at 149, 174 and 197 pounds, respectively. Hanisch is 3-1 in dual competition this season. Bertolino (16-4) was runner-up at the Harold Nichols/Cyclone Open and third at the UNO-Open along with Knipp (12-4) finishing third at the UNI Open. Milord (7-6) finished fifth at the Mike McCready Open on Saturday.
The Vikings received its highest ranking in school history when they were ranked third in the nation. Dana responded by upsetting Missouri Valley and shutting out Missouri Baptist, 52-0. Dana is led by second-ranked Leister Bowling at 165 pounds, fourth-ranked Dante Brown at 125 pounds, and fifth-ranked Brian Tsutsumi at 133 pounds.
The Eagles from Chadron State are coming off a tough loss at the hands of the Colorado Mines, 38-6. CSC combined to win nearly 40 matches at the Kaufman-Brand Open and Jared Webster placed third at 157 pounds at the Fort Hays Tournament earlier this year.
Iowa State competes at the Midlands championships in Evanston, Ill. Dec. 29-30. The Cyclones finished runner-up to Illinois a year ago with Trent Paulson capturing oustanding wrestler honors with his title at 149 pounds.
