EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Alex Maciag placed second at 174 pounds, and junior Spencer Nadolsky recorded six pins en route to a third-place finish at heavyweight to lead the University of North Carolina wrestling team Saturday at the East Stroudsburg Open at the Warriors' Koehler Fieldhouse. In addition to Maciag's and Nadolsky's finishes, six other Tar Heels placed in the top eight of their respective weight classes.
Maciag ran off four straight wins at 174 to reach the finals. He opened with a 3-1 win over Kevin Owen of Binghamton and followed with major decisions in two of the next three bouts. Maciag posted a 13-3 major decision over Mark Peiffer of Gloucester to advance to the title match, where he fell to Mike Patrovich of Hofstra, 9-6.
Nadolsky, now 11-1 this season, opened with a 6-0 loss to Jake Lininger of Shippensburg and followed with eight straight wins in the consolation bracket to finish third. Six of Nadolsky's victories came via fall, and he claimed the event's pin award with the six falls coming in a total of 7:12. Nadolsky recorded three pins in less than a minute, including a 58-second fall over The Citadel's John Buck in the consolation final. He advanced to the final with a pin of Jon Andriac of Hofstra in 1:19.
Redshirt freshman Vincent Ramirez went 6-2 in the tourney to finish fourth at 141 pounds. The Durham native won his first two matches via fall and now sports an 8-3 record on the season. Junior Drew Forshey (6-1) also finished fourth at 125 with a 4-1 mark on the afternoon.
Sophomore Chris Ramos went 4-2 at 149 to finish if a fifth-place tie for UNC, as did junior Deon Barrett at 165 pounds. Barrett dropped his first bout but finished up 6-2 on the day. Junior David Dashiell (7-2) also finished fifth with a 4-2 mark at 197. Redshirt freshman Jared Royer, who was 4-2 on the day, placed eighth at 125.
The Tar Heels return to the mat next Saturday, Nov. 26, at the Carolina Open at Carmichael Auditorium.
