Upper Iowa University Peacocks
Sept. 8, 2008
The two-time defending Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference wrestling champion, Upper Iowa, released their 2008-09 season schedule this morning. Highlighting the schedule is a trip to Binghamton, N.Y. to compete in the Sprawl and Brawl Duals, a return trip to the NWCA National Duals and four home duals.
The Peacocks will square off against two Division I opponents at the Sprawl and Brawl Duals. Upper Iowa will begin with traditional power Edinboro. Edinboro is just one year removed from sending 10 wrestlers, the most of any competing team, to the Division-I National Tournament where they finished 21st. The Peacocks will also square off against Division I - Wagner and Division II - American International at the duals on Nov. 23.
Upper Iowa will only wrestle at home once in the first semester. The Peacocks will host the Panthers of Ellsworth Community College for a dual on December 3. Ellsworth finished fifth at last year's NJCAA National Tournament and is coached by former UIU assistant Nate Skaar.
Other important matchups in the first semester include a meeting with the 16x defending IIAC champs and defending Division III national champion Wartburg College at the Simpson Invite on Dec. 6 in Indianola, Iowa.
Upper Iowa will open their conference season against the Mavericks of Minnesota State, a new NSIC member, on December 12 in Mankato, Minn. A year ago, Minnesota State was the NWCA National Duals champion and the NCAA National Tournament runner up.
The Peacocks will complete their first semester schedule with a dual in Kirksville, Missouri as they face the Bulldogs of Truman State on December 19.
After Christmas break the Peacocks will return to the NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa as a result of their eighth place finish last season. The National Duals will take place on January 10 and 11.
The team will host the Marauders of U-Mary for their NSIC home opener on January 31. Following the home opener, the team will travel to Sioux Falls, S.D. to battle Augustana, another new NSIC member, on February 1 before hosting Northern State (February 8) and St. Cloud State (February 15), another new NSIC member that finished 12th in last year's NCAA Championships, in the friendly confines of Dorman Gymnasium.
UIU will finish the season on the road against conference opponents Southwest Minnesota State and MSU Moorhead before travelling back to Marshall, Minn. for the NCAA North Regional Championships held February 22. UIU placed third last year behind Minnesota State and Nebraska-Omaha, who finished #2 and #3 at the NCAA Championships. The Peacocks will close the season in Houston, Texas for the 2009 NCAA Division II Championships held from March 13-14.
"I feel we have a great mix of competition on this year's schedule. We should see a lot of different styles throughout the season as we compete against opponents from all divisions," said Head Wrestling Coach Heath Grimm.
The team will open their season at the Pointer Open in Stevens Point, Wis. on Nov. 8. The open is hosted by UW-Stevens Point and begins at 10 a.m.
