Rio De Janeiro, Brazil - Stanford's Matt Gentry, a 2oo4 NCAA Champion and current Volunteer Assistant Coach, captured a bronze medal at the Pan Am Games last week in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Competing for Canada, Gentry posted a 2-1 record in 74 kg Freestyle to earn his first major international medal.
In his first bout, Gentry topped Peru's David Cubas to earn a spot in the semifinal match. After falling to the U.S.'s Joe Heskett, Gentry bounced back and picked up a win over Venezuela's Maximo Blanco in the bronze medal match.
With the help of Stanford's Kerry McCoy, the U.S. coaching staff led the American team to seven medals (1 gold, 4 silver, 2 bronze) and a second place overall team finish.
Gentry continues his international training and competition in Poland this month, and will compete at the Senior World Championships in September.
