Cambridge, Mass. - Amateur Wrestling News recently announced the AWN All-Rookie team for the 2005-06 season and two grapplers from Harvard were among those honored.
Freshman Andrew Flanagan (Bound Brook, N.J.) was ranked first on the All-Rookie team at 157 pounds after compiling a 27-5 mark and winning the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships. At the NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla., Flanagan upset No. 2 CP Schlatter of Minnesota in the second round. The unanimous first-team All-Ivy League wrestler fell in the round of 12 at NCAAs just missing All-American status.
Teammate Louis Caputo (Blue Springs, Mo.) was ranked second at 184 pounds among fellow rookies. Caputo was third at the East Stroudsburg Open and fourth at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. He finished the season with a 27-9 mark, was fifth at the EIWA Championships and earned a wild card bid to the NCAA Championships.
Seven EIWA grapplers were ranked in the top-three in their respective weight classes. Cornell's Troy Nickerson was the only other Ivy League or EIWA wrestler ranked first in his weight class.
