MSU Recognized for Academic Success by National Wrestling Coaches Association

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State wrestling team was recognized by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) in its annual Division I All-Academic Top 30, while redshirt sophomore Franklin Gomez was named to the NWCA Division I All-Academic team.

"Our team and staff have put a lot of effort in to the academic side of our program," said head coach Tom Minkel. "It is nice to see these positive results."

As a team, the Spartans are 23rd nationally with a 2.933 grade point average, which ranks them second among Big Ten programs.

Meanwhile, Gomez compiled a 3.01 GPA, as a interdisciplinary studies in social science major with a concentration in human resources and society. Gomez also was a standout for the Spartans on the mat, earning All-America honors after placing third at the NCAA Championships. In addition, he was the Big Ten champion at 133-pounds and had an overall record of 33-2.
