Charleston, SC - Fifteenth ranked junior Travis Piccard continued his winning ways with a major decision and freshman Darius Caldwell and senior Billy Linane pinned their opponents as The Citadel trounced VMI 32-6 in front of 552 spectators Thursday night in McAlister Field House.
The Citadel (2-5, 1-1 SoCon) traded decisions with the Keydets through the first four matches but the Bulldogs pulled away to a 10-6 lead after Piccard's win and never looked back as they took the final six matches to gain their second dual win of the season as well as their first Southern Conference victory of the season. With the loss, VMI dropped to 5-3-1, 1-1 SoCon.
"It is great to get a SoCon win, especially over VMI," said head coach rOB Hjerling. "The team really bounced back from last week (at Chattanooga). This is a good way to start February."
125 pound freshman Jeremy Adams gave the Keydets the first lead of the match as he beat freshman Andrew McDonald by a 6-2 decision to go ahead 3-0, but Bulldog senior Ryan McClester evened things out at three-a-piece with his 5-2 decision over freshman Tyler Anthony at 133 pounds.
In the 141 pound bout The Citadel's Nolan Roggenkamp defeated sophomore Jay Carter, 4-0. The junior from Enumclaw, WA gained his first dual match victory of the season and put the `Dogs up for the first time in the match at 6-3, but defending 149-pound SoCon Champion Sam Avlarenga tied the match up at 6 all when he beat sophomore Levi Duyn by a 12-6 decision.
At 157 pounds Citadel junior Travis Piccard gained the first decisive victory of the evening when he earned a 15-3 major decision over junior Chris Hardy. That victory got the home crowd involved and the momentum was in the Bulldog's favor the rest of the night.
Junior Dan Thompson followed up Piccard's win with an 8-3 decision over freshman Tommy Cunningham at 165 pounds to move the lead to 13-6, and freshman Darius Caldwell moved the Bulldog lead to 19-6 as he pinned VMI freshman Dustin McCabe at 1:12 in the first period of the 174 pound match.
184 pound senior Keith Clifton sealed the match for The Citadel when he earned his first major decision of the season with an 11-2 victory over junior Jeff Sale. Freshman Aaron Brown then won a 10-5 decision over sophomore Corry Murray at 197 pounds, and senior Billy Linane, defending SoCon Champion in the Heavyweight division, ended the night with an exclamation point as he pinned Keydet freshman Brandon Bryant at 0:56 to give The Citadel a 32-6 victory.
The Citadel and VMI will both be back in action Saturday as they take part in the 11th annual USAA All-Academy Wrestling Championships in McAlister Field House. Other participants include Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, Navy and Norwich. The double elimination tournament starts at 10:00 am with Finals at 5:00 pm. Admission to the day-long event is $8 for adults and $5 for students.
