TEMPE, Ariz. - The UC Davis wrestling team dropped two duals on Sunday afternoon as they competed against two top-ranked teams. Jeff Bristol and Ken Cook each won two matches as the Aggies fell to No. 7 Iowa State 28-18 and No. 19 Arizona State 25-18 in back-to-back duals at ASU's Wells Fargo Center.
In the first dual of the day against Iowa State, Ben Hanisch used two three-point near falls and two minutes of riding time to defeat Aggie Marcos Orozco in a 10-0 major decision in the 125-pound bracket. ISU's Jesse Sundell followed by pinning Omar Gaitan 4:30 into the 133-pound match before No. 2 ranked Nate Gallick claimed a win over No. 6 Derek Moore due to an injury default in the 141-pound match-up.
Jeff Bristol (149) claimed the first Aggie win of the day when he used two takedowns and 1:34 of riding time to defeat Aron Scott in a 7-3 decision. In the 157-pound match, Jason Knipp claimed an 8-7 decision over Dustin Noack. The Cyclones claimed another win in the 165-pound weight class when No. 8 Travis Paulson used three takedowns to defeat Frank Richmond in an 8-2 decision.
No. 14 Ken Cook claimed the second Aggie win of the day when he defeated Grant Turner in a 10-1 major decision in the 174-pound match-up. No. 6 Kurt Backes pinned Tyler Bernacchi (184) 5:50 into the match to claim the final Cyclone win of the day. Aggie Eliot Kelly (197) defeated Joe Curan in a 17-2 technical fall followed by a win by forfeit for Broc Maffia in the heavyweight match to finish off the match. The Cyclones won the dual 28-18.

In the second dual of the day, Arizona State's No. 6 Jeremy Mendoza pinned Marcos Orozco 1:23 into the 125-pound match to tally the first Sun Devil win. The Aggies fought back and won the next three consecutive matches. Omar Gaitan captured a 14-11 decision over Adam Hickey in the 133-pound match-up before Moore (141) won by forfeit. Bristol won his second match of the day when he pinned ASU's Mark LeBeau 4:04 into the match.
The Sun Devils regained momentum in the 157-pound weight class when No. 7 Brian Stith earned a 16-7 major decision against Dustin Noack. No. 10 Patrick Pitsch followed with a 4-1 decision over Frank Richmond before Cook claimed his second win of the day with a 6-1 decision over Alex Pavlenko.
Arizona State finished the dual by winning the final three matches with C.B. Dolloway taking a 8-2 decision over Tyler Bernacchi, No. 13 Ryan Bader majoring Eliot Kelly 15-1 and No. 4 Cain Velasquez posting a 19-4 technical fall over Broc Maffia. The final score of the dual was Arizona State over UC Davis 25-18.
With Sunday's losses the Aggie's season record falls to 2-3 and their Pac-10 record now stands at 1-1. UC Davis will be in competition next when they travel to the Virginia Duals being held Jan. 13-14 in Hampton, Virginia.
