Defending Champs Cal Beat Aggies For Sixth Straight Win

Bennett, Driscoll, Tweed score for UC Davis

Sept. 9, 2007

BERKELEY, Calif. - Senior attacker and former Senior National Team member Michael Sharf scored four goals while teammate Jeff Tyrrell added three to lead No. 2-ranked California to a 17-3 win over UC Davis in non-conference collegiate men's water polo action at Spieker Aquatics Center Sunday.

The eighth-ranked Aggies fall to 3-2 for the year. The Golden Bears, defending NCAA champions, remain undefeated at 6-0.

Adam Bennett, Danny Driscoll and Jesse Tweed accounted for the three UC Davis scores. Vladislav Andreyev, Zac Monsees and Frank Reynolds each added two goals for Cal.

The Bears rolled out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter with a failed five-meter penalty shot standing as the Aggies' closest scoring chance in that frame. UC Davis finally reached the scoreboard in the second when junior Adam Bennett scored on a long outside shot.

Driscoll hit his goal midway through the third period, while Tweed converted an assist from Matt MacLachlan in the final minute of the game. Cal held an 8-1 lead at the halftime break, then extended its advantage to 13-2 through three quarters.

UC Davis hosts UC Santa Barbara for its home opener on Friday, September 14. Game time is noon.

Head coach Steve Doten played for Cal's national-champion teams in the late 1980s.
