Nov. 14, 2005

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Head coach Brad Dancer continues to build for the future as he announced the addition of Alexander "Sasha" Kharkevitch. The Houston, Tex., native signed a national letter of intent to play for the University of Illinois and will join the Illini next fall.

"We are really excited about this signing," said Dancer. "Sasha is someone who we feel has the physical strength to come in and compete at the highest level right away. He is coming into his own as a tennis player and we expect the training grounds that he is in right now to allow him to come in and make an immediate impact with us next year and help continue our tradition of excellence."

Kharkevitch is currently ranked No. 2 in the state of Texas by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) 18-and-under division. In 2004, Kharkevitch was ranked as high as No. 24 in the nation by the USTA 16s. Most recently, Kharkevitch was a singles quarterfinalist at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Pan-American Closed tournament in Tulsa, Okla., and reached the singles semifinal round of the ITF Chanda Rubin Illinois tournament held at the Atkins Tennis Center in October. In addition, Kharkevitch was a finalist at the ATP Gator Bowl last April and in 2004, he was a singles and doubles finalist at the USTA National Open in Midland, Tex.

"I heard about Brad Dancer and what an unbelievable coach he is," said Kharkevitch. "The team has been to the national championship recently and has put together a great record. I've heard really good things about Kent Kinnear and I think both coaches will be able to take my game to the next level. When I visited Illinois I knew this was the place for me - everything seemed to click."

Alexander was born in Russia on October 23, 1987, to Demitri and Julia Kharkevitch. His mom was a touring pro in Russia and his younger sister, Christine, is an up-and-coming player. Kharkevitch is home-schooled and trains with former Illini Royce Ramey (99-00) and Joey Blake for the past four years at Joey Blake's Topnotch Tennis Academy in Scottsdale, Ariz.
