Wurtzman Joins DU's Men's Tennis Coaching Staff

DENVER - Former Ohio State tennis standout Jeremy Wurtzman has been named as an assistant coach of the University of Denver men's tennis program, it was announced Tuesday by first year head coach Danny Westerman.

"We are extremely fortunate to have Jeremy Wurtzman be a part of DU Tennis," Westerman said. "He has won on every level: juniors, college, and the circuit and our guys will benefit tremendously from his experience. He is a great competitor and a fantastic leader and will be a great coach."

Wurtzman has been playing on the ATP Tour and has recorded nine doubles wins and has reached the finals in three singles events, achieving world rankings of No. 210 in doubles and No. 390 in singles. He is currently a member of the USTA High Performance National Team.

Wurtzman enjoyed success as a member of the Ohio State Buckeyes from 2001-04. He was the 2004 ITA National Indoor Champion, the first player to win an individual title in OSU history. He ended the 2004 season ranked No. 3 in the ITA after having advanced to the third round at the NCAA singles championship and spent several weeks ranked No. 1 by the ITA throughout the season. A three-time All-Big Ten selection, Wurtzman was a 2004 All-America, and was named the co-ITA/Farnsworth National Senior Player of the Year and Midwest Region IV Senior Player of the Year. As a captain of the 2003-04 squad, Wurtzman's Buckeyes advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament, the best Ohio State finish at the NCAA tournament. In his four years of collegiate tennis Wurtzman posted a 132-45 singles record and an 86-49 doubles record.

Wurtzman enjoyed a successful juniors career as well, achieving a national ranking of No.1 in doubles from 1995-1997 and No. 3 in singles in 1999. He also won 10 USTA National Junior Championships from 1995-1999.
 

 

A native of Rochester, N.Y., Wurtzman transferred to Ohio State in 2001 after a season at the University of Florida.
