FAIRFIELD, CT - The NJIT men's tennis team opened up its 2008 campaign traveling to Fairfield to compete in the 2008 Fairfield University Men's Tennis Doubles Festival Sunday afternoon.
Competing in the first flight of the Round Robin Pool B, NJIT's Steve Erickson and Cosmin Chiujdea's first opponent was Saint Peter's duo, Chris Frakes and Tony Wilkey. The Highlanders edged the Peacocks, 9-7.
With the win, the Highlanders faced Sacred Heart topping Kiril Kasyanov and Adam Gart, 8-4. In the following round, partners Erickson and Chiujdea suffered an 8-4 loss to Quinnipiac but advanced to the semifinals with a 2-1 doubles record.
In the semifinals, the Highlanders matched up against Bryant's Kevin Gardener and Christian Balestrieri winning easily, 8-2, advancing NJIT to the finals to face host Fairfield.
Fairfield's Joe Michalisin and Rob Ferrante captured the top flight topping Erickson and Chiujdea with an 8-4 victory.
Lang and Tunnero faced Saint Peter's Peter Czajka and JJ Gramatica in the next round, falling 8-6.
NJIT, competing for a seventh place finish in the second flight, could not overtake Queens' Robby Scheuing and Danilo Hiraoka. Lang and Tunnero fell 8-5.
Soloman and Verma defeated Queens' partners Taylor Crabill and Temur Nanikashvii, 8-6, securing seventh place.
The Highlanders will return to action on Tuesday, September 16 when they host their season opener against Rider at the Fleisher Athletic Center Tennis Courts. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:00pm.
