Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa men's tennis team won two 2008 ITA Regional Awards, as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Head Coach Vince Westbrook was named the Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year award for the central region, while freshman Victor Kolik was selected as the ITA Rookie Player of the Year in the central region.
Westbrook won the central region's Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year award for the fourth time in his career. He also won in 1995-96, 1996-97 and 1998-99. Westbrook was prime candidate for this award after achieving the highest ranking in school history of No. 9, winning the Blue/Gray Tennis Classic and the Conference USA Championship for the third-consecutive season.
Kolik becomes only the fifth Golden Hurricane player to win the ITA Rookie of the Year award, with the most recent winner being senior co-captain Will Gray in 2004-05. Kolik compiled a record of 13-4 in the spring season, including four-straight wins over ranked opponents and achieving a ranking as high as No. 75 nationally. Kolik, along with Alberto Sottocorno also made up TU's 13-5 No. 3 doubles team. This was Kolik's second freshman honor this season, also picking up C-USA Freshman of the Year accolades.
The Golden Hurricane will be in action in the first round of the NCAA Tournament as it hosts Binghamton at 4 p.m. at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Saturday.
