Men's Tennis Falls to Virginia in ACC Championship Final

Hurricanes fall just short of beating the conference's top-three seeds this week

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - The 25th-ranked University of Miami men's tennis team's run at the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship ended Sunday with a 4-0 loss to top-seeded and top-ranked Virginia in its first appearance in the championship final.


After UM (16-7) lost its first doubles point in four matches at the championship, Virginia (28-0) won four of six first sets in singles play.

 

No. 29 Treat Huey took care of Vivek Subramanian in the second position, 6-2, 6-1, to put the UVA up, 2-0. The Cavaliers would wrap up the match a short time later when Michael Shabaz beat Keith Crowley, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 and Ted Angelinos took out Barnabas Carrega, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 to clinch the win.


 

 

 

David Rosenfeld was the lone Hurricane to win the first set, beating No. 11 Dominic Inglot, 6-4, before the two were tied 3-3 in the second set when the match ended. In a match up of two of the nation's top three players, No. 1 Somdev Devvarman came from behind to win the first set over No. 3 Daniel Vallverdu, 7-5, and at No. 4, Sanam Singh was ahead of Carl Sundberg, 6-2, 5-5 when play was stopped.

 

Virginia opened the match winning the doubles point with wins at Nos. two and three. Inglot and Shabaz beat the 49th-ranked duo of Rosenfeld and Subramanian, 8-5, at No. 2 to give the Cavaliers the early advantage before the No. 53 team of Angelinos and Lee Singer downed Crowley and Hector Nieto, 8-3, at No. 3.

 

The Hurricanes will now begin preparation for the NCAA Championships. Team seedings will be announced on April 29 with the individual pairings announced the following day.
