Georgia, Stanford Remain At No. 1 In Rankings

Bulldogs will be top seed in this week's SEC Tournament

Top spots: The Georgia men and Stanford women are No. 1 in this week's Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Georgia (23-0) closed out its second straight unbeaten regular season and will be the top seed in this week's SEC Tournament. Stanford improved to 19-1 last week with wins over USC and UCLA and closes out its regular season this week against No. 9 California.

 

Rounding out the Top 10: Following Georgia in this week's men's top 10 are (in order): Virginia, Ohio State, (tie) Baylor and Notre Dame, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Mississippi, Southern California and UCLA. Following Stanford in the women's top 10 are: Notre Dame, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Northwestern, Southern California, California and North Carolina.

 

Familiar faces at the top: This is the fourth straight week (and fifth time overall) that Stanford and Notre Dame have been Nos. 1-2 in the women's rankings this season. Last season these two schools held the top two positions in eight of the last nine rankings during the regular season. The Irish were able to hold on to their No. 2 ranking despite a loss to then-No. 9 Northwestern last week. Notre Dame ( 86.39) is less than a point ahead of No. 3 Florida (85.37).

 

Top 25 newcomers: The Virginia Commonwealth (17-7) men are the lone newcomers to either of this week's Top 25 rankings.

Conference count: Men's Top 25: ACC and SEC - 6 schools; Big 10 and Big 12 - 3; Pac-10 - 2; and 5 conferences with 1. Women's Top 25: ACC - 7; SEC and Pac-10 - 5; Big 10 and Big 12 - 2; and 4 conferences with 1.
 
Conference championship month: The NCAA Championship field will begin to take shape over these last two weekends of April. Eighteen conferences will be crowning champions this weekend: Atlantic-10 (women), ACC, Atlantic Sun, Big East, Big South, Colonial Athletic, Conference USA, Metro Atlantic, Mid-Continent, Mid-Eastern, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot League (men), SEC, Southern, Sun Belt, West Coast and WAC.

 

Mark your calendar: The 2007 NCAA Men's and Women's Division I Tennis Championships will take place at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., May 17-28. The rounds of 16 through the finals of the team tournaments are May 17-22 and the singles and doubles championships take place May 23-28. First and second round NCAA matches will take place at campus sites (to be determined May 1) May 11-13.
