Emory Defeats UC-Santa Cruz to Win ITA Indoor Division III Championship

ST. PETER, MINN. - Top-seed Emory University (GA) defeated second-seed California-Santa Cruz 5-2 to claim its second consecutive Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Indoor Championship. Gustavus defeated the University of Redlands (CA) 6-1 to finish in third place. The tournament was held at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota.

The championship match began with three very competitive doubles matches. Emory came away with the important doubles point by picking up wins at the #1 position, where Mark Odgers and Alex Jacobs defeated Matt Seeburger and Matt Brunner 8-6, and at the #3 position, where Jesse Ferlianto and Patrick Redmond defeated Andrew Cohen and Bryce Parmelly 8-6. Santa Cruz won the #2 doubles match with Kevin Casey and Kellen Ali-Christie beating Tyson Ramsay and Josh Rubens 8-6.

Emory jumped out to a 3-0 lead by claiming wins at #2 and #3 singles. Mark Odgers defeated Kevin Casey, 6-1, 6-1 at #2 and Patrick Redmond defeated Shane Templeman 6-1, 6-2. Matt Seeburger kept UC-Santa Cruz in the match by defeating Yoji Masuoka 6-2, 7-5 to cut the lead to 3-1. The Eagles clinched the tournament title when Josh Rubens defeated Matt Brunner 6-0, 6-0 at the #5 position. The two teams split the finals two matches as Alex Jacobs of Emory defeated Kellen Ali-Christie 7-6 (4), 6-2, and Andrew Cohen of Santa Cruz defeated Tyson Ramsay of Emory 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Emory has now won two titles, finished second twice and third once in the five-year history of the Division III ITA Indoor Championships. Gustavus Adolphus is the only other team to have won two ITA Indoor titles.

Gustavus completed a successful weekend with a 6-1 win over the University of Redlands in the third place match. Redlands picked up its lone point of the match by winning the doubles point. Gustavus opened the match with a win at the #1 position as Adam Morgan and Brett Morse-Karzen defeated Michael Thoeresz and Andrew Elling 8-3. However, the Bulldogs rallied to win the other two matches in thrilling fashion. Sean Dolan and Ashwin Bhargava defeated Ben Lundell and Jesse Brauer 9-8 (3) at #2 and Robert Vincent and Brian Manning slipped past Andy Bryan and Roy Bryan 9-8 (4).

Gustavus came back to claim the convincing win by winning all six singles matches. Ben Lundell defeated Michael Thoeresz 6-4, 7-5 at #1, Adam Morgan defeated Andrew Elling 6-2, 6-3 at #2, Jesse Brauer defeated Sean Dolan 7-6 (6), 6-0 at #3, Brett Morse-Karzen defeated Ashwin Bhargava 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at #4, Andy Bryan defeated Robert Vincent 7-6 (5), 6-4 at #5 and Roy Bryan defeated Ian Bradburn 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 at #6.

The consolation finals were played very late Saturday night with Trinity (TX) defeating Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CA) 7-0 to finish fifth and Washington and Lee (VA) defeating Mary Washington (VA) 5-2 to place seventh.
