The fifth-ranked California men's soccer team remained undefeated in 2008 as it tied No. 7 SMU, 1-1, in a battle of top-10 teams Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears (3-0-1) scored in the 82nd minute to tie the match at one.
Following a scoreless first half, SMU (3-0-1) got on the board first. Paulo da Silva headed a shot past Cal keeper junior Stefan Frei in the 48th minute to put the Mustangs on the board.
The Bears came close to drawing even numerous times, including one shot that bounced off the crossbar. Finally in the 82nd minute, sophomore A.J. Soares headed a shot in the back of the net to even the score at one. Senior Pat Marion and sophomore Davis Paul recorded assists on the score.
The Bears travel to Santa Clara next Friday for a match with the Broncos scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Cal returns to Edwards Stadium on Sept. 21 when it faces Creighton at 12 p.m.
