Late Goal Spoils Exhibition Opener For Aggies

Aug. 25, 2004

DAVIS, Calif. - Brian Meherg converted a penalty kick in the 83rd minute of play that gave Notre Dame De Namur a 2-1 win over UC Davis in a men's soccer exhibition game Wednesday afternoon at Aggie Field.

With the score tied 1-1, Meherg was racing towards the goal when he was fouled inside the penalty area, resulting in the penalty kick. Seven minutes earlier, Aggie senior forward Johnny Yau tied the game when his header off a Keith Gilbert cross found its way past Argonaut goalkeeper Mike Whittaker.

The Argonauts went ahead early in the contest when Nick Hooper took a pass from Meik Fischer-Phifer and dribbled around a charging Aggie goalkeeper Charles Warne before putting the ball in from the left side.

UC Davis outshot Notre Dame de Namur 22-7 on the afternoon but managed just the one score.

UC Davis opens its 2004 season on Sept. 2 at the University of San Francisco.
