Tulsa, Oklahoma - Tulsa senior Kyle Brown scored two goals and earned an assist on another score to lead the Golden Hurricane to a 3-2 victory over the Kansas City Wizards reserve team in exhibition play at the Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium.
In a match-up between Tulsa two-time All-American and current Kansas City rookie Ryan Pore (2002-04) and his former teammates, TU held Pore to just one shot for the game. Pore, the nation's leading scorer and a finalist for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy in 2004, was constantly double and triple-teamed by TU defenders.
Kansas City jumped on the Golden Hurricane early when Jake Bleyenberg stole a ball from a Tulsa defender and nailed a shot from eight yards out to put the Wizards up, 1-0, with just 2:41 gone by in the first half.
Brown, a three-time all-Missouri Valley Conference first-team performer, missed last season with a knee injury, but needed less than 10 minutes to find the back of the net. Senior Jamie Dabney, who was also sidelined last season with a similar injury, played a beautiful through-ball to Brown, who finished the play from 17 yards out and tied the game, 1-1, at 9:39.
Less than two minutes later, junior Joe Wear headed in a Brown corner kick to the right side of the net to give TU a 2-1 advantage at the 11:35 mark. Brown picked up the assist on the score.
Brown struck again in the first half for his second goal when his shot deflected off a Wizards' defender and into the back of the net at the 27:47 mark to give Tulsa a 3-1 lead. Freshman Eric Burkholder collected the assist on the score.
Kansas City opened the second half with a quick goal and pulled to within a score when Justin Detter controlled a pass from Bleyenberg and scored. Detter found himself in a one-on-one match-up with TU goalkeeper Dominic Cervi, and got around Cervi to tap his shot into an open net at 49:40. Bleyenberg earned the assist on the play.
