BALTIMORE, MD -- Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse coach Dave Pietramala announced today that Seth Tierney, who has served as the Blue Jays' offensive coordinator for the last four seasons, has been promoted to Associate Head Coach, effective immediately. Tierney will continue to serve as the team's offensive coordinator, while also assisting in all other aspects of the administration of the program.
"Since arriving on campus Seth has done an outstanding job of developing our offensive personnel," Pietramala noted. "In addition, he has passed on several other opportunities that have been presented in the last two years and this speaks highly of his commitment to Johns Hopkins University and our men's lacrosse program. This promotion is well-deserved as we recognize the integral role that Seth plays in the success of our program."
Tierney, a 1991 Johns Hopkins graduate and the offensive coordinator at Hofstra prior to returning to Hopkins in June, 2000, directs an offense that has been among the nation's elite in each of the last two years. The Blue Jays led the nation in scoring offense and extra-man offense in 2003, when Hopkins advanced to the NCAA Championship game. Last season the Blue Jays finished fifth in the nation in scoring offense and extra-man offense en route to an appearance in the national semifinals.
The success of the Blue Jay offense has translated into numerous individual honors during his tenure. In the last three years Tierney's midfielders and attackmen have earned a total of 13 All-America selections and two Blue Jay midfielders have been finalists for the prestigious Tewaaraton Award (Adam Doneger-2003, Kyle Harrison-2003 & 2004). Harrison also earned the McLaughlin Award as the nation's top midfielder last season.
"I am very appreciative of the opportunities that Johns Hopkins University has provided me both as a student-athlete and as a member of the coaching staff," Tierney noted. "The responsibility of being a member of the lacrosse staff at Johns Hopkins is something I take very seriously and I look forward to continuing in our efforts to annually produce a lacrosse program that members of the Johns Hopkins community can be proud of on and off the field."
In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Tierney has also spearheaded many of the Blue Jays' community-service efforts, including the highly-successful Holiday Magic program last month. Throughout the month of December members of the men's lacrosse team collected and distributed toys, games, school supplies and necessities (clothing, shoes, etc.) to underprivileged children and various homeless shelters and transitional homes.
Johns Hopkins has posted a 47-10 record since Tierney arrived in 2001, including a 39-6 mark over the last three years. The Blue Jays have ended the regular season ranked number one in each of the last three years and advanced to the Final Four in each of those years as well.
