Miami is unbeaten in Non-CCHA games and has a 7-1-0 record versus ranked opponents
Dec. 16, 2007
TROY, NY - Freshman forward Tommy Wingels powered the MU offense Sunday afternoon, scoring twice, as the RedHawks completed the weekend sweep of Rensselaer, beating the No. 16 Engineers by a 5-1 score. Miami has now won seven straight road contests.
For the first time in four games, Miami scored the first goal when Tommy Wingels rang a shot off the right goalpost and past Rensselaer goaltender Jordan Alford.
With only 1:31 to go in the second period, Christian Jansen beat junior goaltender Jeff Zatkoff with a shot from the blue line that found its way through a crowd in front of the Miami net.
The RedHawks came out energized in the third period, as Miami regained the lead just 27 seconds into the stanza when senior captain Ryan Jones tapped a lose puck behind Alford for his 16th tally of the year.
Wingels continued the early third period scoring when he joined the play late and accepted a pass from senior forward Nino Musitelli between the offensive zone faceoff circles and netted his second goal of the night. The goal was his ninth of the season, which leads all CCHA freshmen in goal scoring.
Junior forward Justin Mercier took a great feed from sophomore forward Jarod Palmer and wristed a shot past Alford to extend the Miami lead to three goals. For Mercier, the goal was his 14th of the year, setting a new career high for goals in a season.
