OXFORD, Ohio - With the Miami hockey team making waves in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association after its recent rise to the top of the standings, several Miami alums are doing the same at the next level in the National Hockey League. Presently, six former Miami hockey players are active in the NHL, the most that have ever been playing in the show at the same time.
The most recent addition to Miami's list of active players in the NHL is Pat Leahy, who was called up last week by the Boston Bruins. Leahy played from 1998-01 for the RedHawks and was the 31st player in school history to post 100 career points.
Also recently called up is the Columbus Blue Jackets' defenseman Todd Rohloff. This is Rohloff's second stint in the show having played 16 games at the end of the 2001-02 season for the Washington Capitals. Rohloff was a four-year letterwinner at Miami from 1995-98.
Longtime NHL'er Brian Savage, who recently had his jersey retired at Miami, is in his third season with the Phoenix Coyotes. Savage has scored 171 goals and 151 assists during his 11-year professional career. At Miami, Savage played from 1991-93 and compiled career numbers of 109 points (66-43-109) in 106 games. He started his NHL career with the Montreal Canadians in 1993-94.
Representing Miami on the Tampa Bay Lightning roster is defenseman Dan Boyle. Boyle has enjoyed a seven-year NHL career in which he has scored 30 goals and 93 assists in 270 games. Prior to playing for the Lightning, Boyle spent his first four years in the show with the Florida Panthers. Boyle is Miami's ninth all-time scorer with 147 career points from 1995-98, as well as its only two-time All-American.
Kevyn Adams, a Miami player from 1993-96, is in his third season with the Carolina Hurricanes and his eighth season in the NHL. He began his professional career with the Toronto Maple Leafs and 317 games later has posted career numbers of 33 goals and 48 assists for 81 points. Adams ranks third all-time at Miami in points with 172 points (69-103-172).
The sixth Miami hockey representative in the show is the Atlanta Thrashers' Randy Robitaille. During his eight-year NHL career, Robitaille has played for the Boston Bruins, Nashville Predators, Los Angeles Kings and the New York Islanders before landing in Atlanta. Robitaille has scored 124 points (43-81-124) in 276 career NHL games. He lettered twice at Miami from 1996-97, compiling 100-plus career points on 41 goals and 65 assists.
Not quite, but almost there are 2002 graduate Mike Glumac and 2001 graduate Ernie Hartlieb, who are both playing for the Worcester IceCats of the American Hockey League. Hartlieb and Glumac are second and third on the IceCats in scoring, respectively, a team that is a feeder for the St. Louis Blues.
The college-level RedHawks take a break for final exams these next two weeks before resuming competition at the Dodge Holiday Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. on Dec. 20-21. Miami plays No. 5 New Hampshire in the first game on Saturday, at 4 p.m. in Minnesota's Mariucci Arena. Possible second game opponents are Minnesota and Princeton.
