Brad Roberts Cops Second Goalie Of The Week Award

Nov. 28, 2005

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Brad Roberts was named Atlantic Hockey's "Goalie of the Week" Monday for his efforts in Army's 2-1 victory at Connecticut on Saturday afternoon. It is the second weekly award for the senior netminder in the past three weeks. Roberts was also the league's "Goalie of the Week" on Nov. 14.

Roberts stopped 22 of 23 Connecticut shots, backstopping the Black Knights to the team's first road win of the season and its first league win as well. The workhorse between the pipes for head coach Brian Riley's charges, made two outstanding saves in each of the second and third periods to preserve his club's one-goal lead.

"Brad gives us a chance to win each and every game," Riley said. "UConn was an example of a game that could have gone either way, and he gives the rest of the team confidence in that situation. He is capable of making that big save. There is no sense of panic."

The Cassville, N.Y., native has played 95.7 percent of the minutes this season and leads Atlantic Hockey in saves with 320. In seven league contests thus far, Roberts sports a phenomenal 2.09 goals-against average and has yielded more than two goals to a league foe just twice.

"It's great knowing you have him back there," sophomore defenseman Ian McDougall said. "The confidence he gives the team means a lot."

Saturday's matinee at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum on the campus of the University of Connecticut was another display of Roberts' heroics in the crease. Army secured its second road win against the Huskies since 1979, while capturing two much-needed points in the Atlantic Hockey standings. The Black Knights pulled into a tie for sixth place with the win over UConn. Both schools have four points in league play.

Roberts' 22 saves moves him closer to the school record for career saves held by Tom Garver (USMA '77). With 2,402 saves to his credit, the firstie needs 456 more stops to surpass Garver on the all-time charts. In addition, Roberts boasts the third-best career save percentage in school history (.904) and the fourth-best career goals-against average (2.84).

Army travels to Sacred Heart Tuesday for an Atlantic Hockey tilt versus the Pioneers at the Milford Ice Pavilion in Milford, Conn. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
