OMAHA, Neb. (http://gomavs.unomaha.edu)-- Defenseman Juha Uotila rifled a slap shot into the back of the net with 2:16 left in the game to give the Mavericks a 3-2 Central Collegiate Hockey Association win over Notre Dame and a split in their weekend series.

The victory, before a season-high crowd of 7,178 at Qwest Center Omaha, ended an eight-game winless streak for the Mavericks, who are now 4-7-4 overall and 3-6-1 in the CCHA. No. 5-ranked Notre Dame fell to 10-3-1 and 5-2-1.

The teams traded first period goals and skated through a scoreless second before freshman defenseman Mark Bernier scored his first career goal to give UNO a 2-1 lead. Bernier used assists from Alex Nikiforuk and Scott Parse to beat Notre Dame goaltender David Brown, the league-leader in goals against average entering the weekend just 65 seconds into the period.

The Fighting Irish tied the game a little over four minutes later on a power play goal by Kevin Deeth.

Holding penalties by Jason Paige and Tom Sawatske 1:10 apart late in the third period gave the Mavericks a two-man advantage. After a flurry around the Notre Dame net, the puck came out to Uotila on the left point and he buried his second goal of the year. Parse and Nikiforuk earned assists.

The Irish took the lead with a shorthanded goal by Noah Babin midway through the first period and the Mavericks quickly tied the game 95 seconds later on Bryan Marshall's fourth of the year at 12:46.

Freshman goaltender Jeremie Dupont turned aside 25 shots to earn his third win of the year for the Mavericks. Brown made 19 saves.

UNO continues CCHA play next weekend in a two-game series at Bowling Green.
