Providence, RI - Senior Matt Vokes (Auburn, MA) scored his first goal of the season to tie the game at 3-3, as the Brown men's ice hockey team (0-4-2, 0-2-2) tied Harvard (4-2-1, 4-2-1) on Tuesday night at Meehan Auditorium. The game saw three different lead changes, though neither team ever led by more than a goal, and was delayed for 12 minutes late in the game when a piece of glass shattered near the Brown bench.

The Bears fell behind just 1:52 into the game when Jimmy Fraser scored a power-play goal from the top of the right face-off circle exactly 10 seconds into the man-advantage.

The lead would not last long, however, as junior Sean McMonagle (Oakville, ONT) tied the game 4:11 later, scoring on Brown's first power-play chance of the night. Senior Eric Slais (Fenton, MO) passed the puck up to McMonagle at the right point, who worked around his defenseman and blasted a shot from the center of the blueline that beat Matt Hoyle to his left about waist-high.

The two teams headed into the second period knotted at 1-1 and just 3:39 into the middle frame, Slais gave the Bears their first lead of the season, completing a two-on-one rush with junior Jordan Pietrus (Vermilion, ALB). Junior Aaron Volpatti (Revelstoke, BC) collected the puck off a Harvard stick in the neutral zone and passed up to Pietrus on the left wing. Pietrus worked in with Slais to his right, sent a perfect pass behind the Harvard defender to Slais, who beat Hoyle with a low-shot for the 2-1 lead.

The Crimson would knot the score late in the second, scoring on the power-play for the second time. Brian McCafferty, who assisted Fraser's goal, beat junior Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) glove-side with a hard shot from just inside the left point with 4:33 remaining in the period, as the two teams headed into the locker room in a 2-2 deadlock.

Harvard took a 3-2 lead just 40 seconds into the third when Colin Moore beat Rosen with a low-angle shot, redirecting a feed from Ian Tallett.

Brown would not quit and forced the third tie in the game at 6:29 when Vokes redirected a shot from sophomore Jeremy Russell (St. Albert, ALB) into the back of the net with Brown on its fourth power-play of the night. The goal came on Brown's third chance during an odd play which saw Hoyle stop the puck at the goal-line after senior Ryan Garbutt (Winnipeg, MAN) dumped it into the zone. Hoyle went to clear it, but the puck was intercepted by Pietrus, who took a quick shot, which Hoyle saved. However, the rebound went right to Russell, who knocked fired it back in, where Vokes was able to redirect it past Hoyle.

The Bears went up on the power-play with 1:47 remaining in regulation when Moore was whistled for goaltender interference. With 20 seconds remaining in regulation, senior Mike Stuart (Rome, NY) was carrying the puck up the ice looking for a last-minute goal. Just after passing the Brown bench, Stuart was hit into the glass by McCafferty near the home penalty box when his skate went up and shattered the glass, delaying the game for 12 minutes while Hermano Fortes and the Brown facilities crew cleared the glass from the ice and the surrounding area.

The delay effectively killed Brown's momentum going into the final seconds as the two teams headed for overtime, the sixth overtime contest between Brown and Harvard in the last eight Harvard-Brown games played at Meehan Auditorium.

Both goalies made some game-saving stops in the overtime, as Hoyle made a save on Vokes and then another on Garbutt on his attempt on the rebound. At the other end of the ice, Rosen stopped all three shots he faced to finish the night with 35.

In the midst of a six-game homestand, Brown returns to action next Tuesday when it hosts Yale in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
