AMHERST, Mass. - After helping the men's hockey team to a split weekend which included an upset win over No. 1 Boston University, sophomore goalie Paul Dainton was named the UMass/Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week on Monday afternoon. Dainton made 52 saves on the weekend including 30 in the win over the Terriers. The Minutemen will have a home-and-home weekend with defending national champion Boston College including Saturday night's tilt at the Mullins Center which is the annual Operation 8K event.
Dainton allowed just three goals in the 5-1 win over Boston University and the 2-0 loss to UMass Lowell last weekend. He posted a .945 save percentage. Against BU, Dainton allowed just one goal while making 30 saves - 16 of which were in the first period allowing UMass to survive heavy pressure from the Terriers before going on the offensive. Against UML, he allowed two goals, while making 22 saves.
The sophomore netminder ranks sixth nationally in goals against average (1.30) and fifth nationally in save percentage (.948) on the season.
Following the weekend, UMass jumped four spots in the USCHO/CBS College Sports Top-20 poll to No. 16. Fans can buy tickets now here, but are encouraged to hurry as a huge presale number of tickets are already taken.
Dainton will be honored on Wednesday at Noon at the Weekly Sports Luncheon. The luncheons are open to the public and will be held in Room 1009 in the Campus Center. For the $10 cost attendees receive a salad-to-dessert meal. Two hour parking passes can be picked up for $2 when you pay for your meal.
Speakers this week will include hockey head coach Don "Toot" Cahoon, football head coach Don Brown, women's basketball head coach Marnie Dacko, and skiing head coach Skip Fox.
