Men's Hockey Falls to Lake Superior State in OT, 7-6

Oct. 14, 2006

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Buckeye senior forward Mathieu Beaudoin scored his first career hat trick, but it was not enough, as the Ohio State men's hockey team lost to Lake Superior State, 7-6 in overtime, Saturday in Value City Arena. The Buckeyes came back to tie the game five times, including Beaudoin's extra-attacker goal with 0.2 seconds remaining. However, Dominic Osman scored 2:45 into overtime to cap the Lakers' win.

The teams split the two-game Central Collegiate Hockey Association series after the Buckeyes posted a 1-0 win in the opener Friday. Each team now is 1-1 on the year and 1-1 in league play.

The teams combined for five goals in the first period, with the Lakers leading, 3-2, at the end of the stanza. The LSSU got on the board just 2:26 into the game, when Nik Sellers scored. Andrew Schembri (Sr., Mississauga, Ontario) tied the game for the Buckeyes at 11:40 with a power-play goal, assisted by Jason DeSantis (Jr., Oxford, Mich.) and Kenny Bernard (Sr., Sarnia, Ontario). The Lakers then scored twice in 29 seconds to take a 3-1 lead. Josh Sim scored on the power play at 16:19, followed by Matt Martello's even-strength tally at 16:48. Buckeye junior Tommy Goebel (Parma, Ohio) cut the Laker lead to one (3-2) at 17:12 with his second goal of the series, with Johann Kroll (Jr., Plymouth, Minn.) and Domenic Maiani (Jr., Shelby Township, Mich.) picking up the assists. The Lakers put 16 shots on net in the period, the Buckeyes eight. Each team was 1-for-3 on the power play in the period.

Ohio State and Lake Superior State ended the second period tied at 4. Maiani tied the game at 3-all just 56 seconds into the period with power-play goal, assisted by freshman Mathieu Picard (St. Isidore, Ontario) and Sean Collins (Sr., Troy, Mich.). John Scrymgeour put the Lakers back on top (4-3) with a goal at 12:39. Mathieu Beaudoin (Sr., Rock Forest, Quebec) closed out the period with a shorthanded goal with just 15 seconds remaining in the period. Bernard forced a turnover in the neutral zone and Beaudoin picked up the puck, skating down the right wing and beating LSSU goalie Pat Inglis for his first goal of the season. Ohio State outshot the Lakers in the period, 13-8.

Lake Superior State went ahead, 5-4, 2:08 into the third period when Dan Eves scored. Beaudoin added his second goal of the game at 10:06 with the Buckeyes on a 5-minute major power play. Schembri passed the puck from the right post across the slot to Beaudoin, who put the puck into the basically empty net with Inglis still on the right side. Bernard had the second assist on the goal. Nathan Perkovich scored a power-play goal of his own at 13:13 to put the Lakers ahead, 6-5. Trailing by one late in the game, the Buckeyes pulled goalie Joseph Palmer (Fr., Yorkville, N.Y.) for the extra attacker with 51 seconds remaining. Beaudoin tied the game at 6 with 0.2 on the clock, putting in the rebound of a DeSantis shot. Maiani had the second assist. Ohio State had 12 shots in the period, while the Lakers had eight.

In overtime, the Buckeyes had two shots on goal stopped by Inglis. The Lakers then carried the puck into the zone. Palmer made the initial stop on Derek R. Smith's shot before Dominic Osman put in the rebound to lift the Lakers to the win.

In the game, the Buckeyes outshot the Lakers, 35-34. Palmer made 27 saves in 61:35, while Inglis had 29 saves in 62:45 for the Lakers.

Ohio State was 3-for-6 on the power play in the game, while the Lakers converted 2-of-7 chances.

Game Notes
The Buckeyes will host Minnesota of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association for two games next weekend. The teams will meet at 7:05 p.m. Friday and 8:05 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena.

Beaudoin's hat trick was the first of his career. It was the Buckeyes' first since Tom Fritsche had three goals against Sacred Heart Jan. 29, 2005. He had seven two-goal games in his Buckeye career before the hat trick vs. the Lakers.

Bernard had a career-best three assists. It was the first multiple-assist game of his career. The Buckeyes had one three-assist game last season, when Maiani had three helpers at Alaska Jan. 20.

Maiani matched his career best with three points, on a goal and two assists. It was the fifth three-point game of his career and the first since Jan. 20 at Alaska.

Picard's first-period assist was the first point of his Buckeye career.

Beaudoin now has five shorthanded goals in his career to tie for eighth in program history. The career leader is Larry Marson, who had 11 shorthanded tallies from 1979-82. Beaudoin is tied with Bill Davidge (1974-77), Eric Meloche (1997-00) and Don Oliver (1989-91) for eighth.

The two assists were a career best for DeSantis, who had nine helpers entering the game.

The Lakers' goal at 2:26 of the first period ended the Buckeyes' shutout streak vs. Lake Superior State at 212:45. Ohio State last allowed a goal to LSSU 10:45 into the second period of the teams' game Feb. 5, 2005 (a 3-2 Buckeye win in overtime). OSU had shut out Lake Superior State in each of the last three games.

The loss ended the Buckeyes' 10-game winning streak and 14-game (12-0-2) unbeaten streak against Lake Superior State. The win was the Lakers' first vs. the Buckeyes since Feb. 11, 2000 (1-0 in Columbus). The game also stopped a streak of 15 games the Buckeyes held LSSU to two or fewer goals.

The game was the first time the Buckeyes lost when scoring six goals since falling to Clarkson, 7-6, Dec. 28, 2000, in the Everblades College Classic in Estero, Fla.

Postgame Quotes
John Markell, Ohio State head coach
On Ohio State's performance
"We had too many guys off tonight against a team that was hungry. Maybe we kept it too close last night and it gave them some confidence. They were getting every rebound tonight. We kept having to catch up."

Mathieu Beaudoin, Ohio State senior forward
On his hat trick
"Every time we were down, I was able to tie it back up. I hoped it would be a boost for the team, but then we ended up losing in overtime. To allow them to score seven goals is unacceptable."

On coming back to tie Lake Superior State five times
"We would get a goal and they would come back. Then we would be down a goal and come back and get another. We were able to do that a few times, but ran out of time in the end."

On Ohio State increasing its offensive productivity
"I would rather win 1-0 everyday than score six goals and lose. We showed our offense a bunch, but forgot to show up in our own zone."

On his last-second goal
"I didn't know there wasn't any time left. I looked up and saw it was good, then just went back to the bench and got ready for overtime."

Jim Roque, Lake Superior State head coach
On Lake Superior State's performance
"Obviously we gained a lot of confidence last night. We were determined not just to feel good about ourselves, but to win too. Our guys fought hard and battled. I have to give them the credit because we didn't change anything tacitly. Last night we couldn't score even when we had the opportunity."

On Lake Superior State's freshman class
"We have a pretty talented group of kids. You can coach all you want, but you have to have the players to win. It was a sloppy game because it's only the second game of the year."

Dominic Osman, Lake Superior State senior forward
On the series
"It was tough coming in with no goals tonight, but we had confidence from last night. It's so nice to see the freshmen step up like they have. They inspired me tonight. We knew if we stuck with our plan we wouldn't be shut out."

On the overtime
"Coach told us just to be ready to go and not get down. There was a sense on the bench we were going to win. It always seemed like Ohio State had our number, but tonight we just stuck with it."

Pat Inglis, Lake Superior State freshman goalie
On his first game
"It was a bit tough at times, but it felt good to know the guys have confidence in me. I have to earn my starts just like everyone else."
