Sept. 25, 2004

OXFORD, Ohio -- Derek Edwardson, a 2004 Miami graduate and former member of the ice hockey team, signed a contract yesterday to play for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League for the 2004-05 season. He was selected as Miami's Co-Male Athlete of the Year this past year after being a Hobey Baker Top-Ten Finalist and the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Player of the Year.

Edwardson became just the sixth player in program history to earn All-America status being named to the JOFA/AHCA All-America Second Team. He was only the second player in program history to seize CCHA Player of the Year accolades and the fourth to be named a Hobey Baker Award finalist. Edwardson led the CCHA in scoring with 35 points over 28 league contests en route to the team's second-place regular-season finish and the program's third NCAA Tournament appearance. In addition to earning spots on the CCHA First Team and the CCHA All-Academic Team, Edwardson was a member of the CoSIDA Academic All-District IV At-Large Second Team. He graduated with a 3.40 GPA while majoring in exercise science.

Along with Miami's Edwardson, the Tiger's roster includes several former CCHA players. Joining Edwardson on the Tiger's roster are forwards Rob Collins (Ferris State, 1998-02) and Paul Caponigri (Ohio State, 2000-04), defenseman Keith Aldridge (Lake Superior State, 1992-96) and netminder Dieter Kochan (Northern Michigan, 1993-97).
