Former Friar Brian Burke Named GM of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Former Friar Brian Burke was named executive vice president and general manager of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks on Monday, June 20. Burke, who was previously the president and general manager of the Vancouver Canucks, is the third former Providence College hockey player currently serving as a GM of a NHL franchise. Lou Lamoriello `63 and John Ferguson, Jr. `89 also are serving as GMs of the New Jersey Devils and the Toronto Maple Leafs, respectively.

Burke spent six seasons with the Vancouver Canucks (1998-2004), where he was named Sporting News "NHL Executive of the Year" in 2001. Most recently, he served as a TSN analyst.

Burke played four seasons at Providence College and graduated with a bachelor's degree in History in 1977. In his four years at PC, he played in 112 games and recorded 38 points (21 goals, 17 assists). Burke then signed with the Philadelphia Flyers' organization and played on the 1978 Calder Cup Champion Maine Mariners. Following his playing career, Burke attended Harvard Law School. In 1987, he became the Assistant General Manager of the Vancouver Canucks and later the President and General Manager of the Hartford Whalers. He also served as the senior vice president and director of hockey operations for the NHL (1993-98).
