Former DU All-Americans Stastny and Carle Earn NHL All-Rookie Honors

Duo helped Pioneers to 2005 NCAA National Championship

DENVER - Former University of Denver hockey All-Americans Paul Stastny (Colorado) and Matt Carle (San Jose) were named to the 2007 National Hockey League All-Rookie Team, announced last night in Toronto. Stastny and Carle were joined on the All-Rookie Team by forwards Evgeni Malkin (Pittsburgh) and Jordan Stahl (Pittsburgh), defenseman Marc Edouard-Vlasic (San Jose) and goaltender Mike Smith (Dallas).

Stastny finished runner-up to Malkin for the Calder Trophy, awarded to the league's top rookie. Stastny ranked second among all rookies with 78 points on 28 goals and 50 assists. He set an NHL rookie mark by registering at least a point in 20 consecutive games and finished the season tied for the rookie lead in game-winning goals with six. Stastny ranked second in power-play goals (11) and was fourth in goals (28). Carle, the 2006 Hobey Baker Award winner as the nation's top collegiate hockey player, finished the 2006-07 season as the scoring leader among rookie defensemen and was sixth among all Sharks with 42 points on 11 goals and 31 assists in 77 games.

Stastny and Carle helped DU to its seventh NCAA National Championship in 2004-05. Stastny tallied two goals in the Pioneers' 4-1 win over North Dakota in the NCAA title game, while finishing his freshman campaign with 45 points on 17 goals and 28 assists. He earned All-WCHA Rookie Team honors and was named the nation's top freshman by U.S. College Hockey Online. Carle earned the first of two All-America honors in 2004-05 after helping DU to its sixth NCAA title as a freshman in 2003-04. Carle amassed 44 points from the blueline during DU's championship run in 2004-05.

In 2005-06, Carle and Stastny earned All-America honors after leading DU to a 21-15-3 record. Carle garnered college hockey's top individual prize after netting a career-high 53 points. Stastny shared the team scoring lead with Carle, but won the WCHA scoring title with 44 points in 28 league games.
