May 28, 2004

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Senior goaltender Adam Berkhoel (Woodbury, Minn.) has been named USA Hockey College Player of the Year, it was announced today by USA Hockey. Berkhoel, the NCAA's Most Outstanding Player at both the NCAA Division I West Regional and the Frozen Four, backstopped the Pioneers to their first national championship since 1969. Berkhoel stopped all 24 shots he faced in the national championship game against the University of Maine, earning the first 1-0 shutout in title game history, and just the third shutout ever in the championship game.

Berkhoel, a senior, was tied for first in the NCAA with seven shutouts in the 2003-04 season, and led Denver to a 24-11-4 overall record on the strength of a 2.45 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage. His season statistics ranked him among Denver's all-time goaltending leaders, including a tie for first in shutouts (7), second in games played (39), fifth in saves (1,020), tied for eighth in wins (24), ninth in save percentage (.918), and tenth in goals-against average (2.45). Named to the All-WCHA Third Team, Berkhoel ranked ninth in the conference in goals-against average at 2.86, and seventh in save percentage with a .907 mark.

In the NCAA Tournament, Berkhoel ranked fourth in goals-against average (1.25) and in save percentage (.945), stopping 99 of 104 shots, the second-most faced in the tournament. Berkhoel also ranked first in winning percentage in the tournament, backstopping the Pioneers to four straight victories.

Established to recognize the accomplishments of the top American-born player in college hockey each season, the recipient of the USA Hockey College Player of the Year Award is chosen by a committee that includes members of the media and leading coaches from NCAA Division I hockey.

Berkhoel and nine athletes, coaches, officials, administrators and volunteers will be honored for their excellence, dedication and contributions to the sport of hockey in the United States. The winners will be recognized at the 2004 USA Hockey Annual Congress, to be held here June 2-6 at the Sheraton Colorado Springs Hotel.

The USA Hockey Annual Congress is the yearly gathering of USA Hockey's volunteer leadership, including members of the organization's board of directors, councils, committees and sections.
