April 26, 2005

MADISON, Wisc. A total of eighty-nine (89) student-athletes, representing all 10 Western Collegiate Hockey Association-member institutions, earned distinction as members of the All-WCHA Academic Team for 2004-05.

This represented a gain of 16 student-athletes who earned All-WCHA Academic Team accolades over the previous season of 2003-04, when 73 were honored. A total of 40 players on this year¹s All-WCHA Academic Team were also repeat honorees.

In addition to the 89 players named to the all-league¹s academic team, Minnesota State University senior defenseman Steven Johns was honored as the recipient of this season¹s WCHA Student-Athlete of the Year Award at the annual conference awards banquet held in St. Paul, Minn., during the 2005 Red Baron WCHA Final Five. Thirty-four (34) of the 89 honorees were members of the four WCHA-member teams that made up the 2005 NCAA Frozen Four championship field in Columbus, Ohio, including University of Denver team captain and senior defenseman Matt Laatsch, Colorado College All-American and senior goaltender Curtis McElhinney, University of Minnesota team captain and senior defenseman Judd Stevens, and University of North Dakota team captain and junior defenseman Matt Greene. The repeat national champion Pioneers, Tigers, Golden Gophers and Fighting Sioux made up the first-ever Frozen Four field from one conference. Denver¹s Frozen Four title marked a record 35th national team championship overall for the WCHA since it¹s founding in 1951, including a fourth straight and fifth in the past six seasons.

Johns, an alternate Minnesota State team captain from Cranbrook, B.C., has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.85 in International Business and Management, is a three-time member of the All-WCHA Academic Team including here in 2004-05 and was also one of 15 nominees for this season¹s national Hockey Humanitarian Award. Johns appeared in 142 career games with the Mavericks and had career totals of eight goals and 70 assists for 78 points. He was his team¹s second highest-scoring blueliner this past season with 15 points on two goals and 13 assists. In addition to his noteworthy classroom and on-ice achievements, Johns initiated, planned and organized two fund-raising events in a OEGoals for Kids¹ scholarship fund, which will ultimately fund scholarships through the United Way for young people in the Greater Mankato area, and he has organized a night at the rink which recognizes children who are hospitalized.

To earn a position on the annual All-WCHA Academic Team, student-athletes must meet the following criteria: 1) have completed at least one year of residency at present institution prior to the current academic year; 2) have a grade point average of at least 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) for the previous two semesters or three quarters, or may qualify if his overall GPA is at least 3.00 for all terms at his present institution.
