CAMBRIDGE, MA - Senior Dominic Moore (Thornhill, ONT) was voted the John Tudor Cup winner as the Team MVP to headline the individual award winners, and defenseman Kenny Smith (Stoneham, MA) was named the 108th captain of Harvard Hockey at the team's annual award banquet on Wednesday evening. Also earning individual awards were juniors Kenny Turano (Valley Stream, NY), senior Aaron Kim (Deerfield, IL), and freshmen Charlie Johnson (Calgary, ALB) and Peter Hafner (Gaithersburg, MD).
Moore, the current captain, completed his senior year with 51 points, Harvard's first 50-point scorer in nine seasons. For his career, he finished 11th on the all-time scoring list with 147 points, and 10th on the goal scoring list with 64 career tallies. He also is second on the list of career games played (128), behind Steve Armstrong '88 (131). He was a First Team All-Ivy and All-ECAC pick, was named to the All-Tournament team at both the ECAC Championships and NCAA East Regional, and is Harvard's first First-Team All-American since 1994.
Turano was voted the team's Donald Angier Hockey Trophy winner, awarded to the player showing the greatest amount of general improvement throughout the year. Turano missed 10 games mid-season with an injury, but upon his return made large strides. By the end of the season, he was a regular contributor in the scoring column, netting four goals and five assists in his final 13 games. Kim was voted the Ralph "Cooney" Weiland Award winner for his spirit and devotion to Harvard Hockey. Kim, who played out of position on the blueline his first two varsity seasons, was a hard worker and a consummate team player. He played four years of varsity hockey.
First-year players Johnson and Hafner shared the George Percy Award as the team's top rookie. Johnson appeared in 30 games, netting four goals and 16 assists. His assist total was fourth best on the team. Hafner missed nine games with an injury, but has emerged as one of the team's top blueliners, as he spent the season paired with All-American Noah Welch (Brighton, MA). Hafner tallied a pair of assists in 25 games.
Smith, a rising senior, has been a steady force on the Crimson blueline for three seasons. He played in all but one game this season, and was a contributor to the team's defensive effort that resulted in a national ranking of second in team defense. The team allowed just 78 goals on the season in 34 games, and narrowly missed shattering the school record for team goals against average. Smith was also a contributor on the offensive end, chipping in four goals and 11 assists for 15 points. Juniors Tyler Kolarik (Abington, PA) and Rob Fried (Macon, GA) have been named assistant captains of the 2003-04 squad. The duo, which has played together since their prep days at Deerfield, has been a major part of the Crimson's resurgence over the past three seasons.
Harvard will return 20 letterwinners from a 22-10-2 season, and will kick off the 2003-04 campaign at home on Saturday, November 1 against Brown.
